Playboy Playmates

Playboy Magazine with the Rabbit icon was a great innovator and helped developed Hepf’s magazine into one of the most iconic American men’s magazine in the world.

It was founded in Chicago in 1953, by Hugh Hefner with a loan from his mother. Ironically it was for the pictures of naked and semi-nude woman. Yet despite the irony, it played an important role in the sexual revolution and remains one the most famous names of all time.

Not only is the flagship magazine published in the United States, but special versions are published worldwide.

Playboy Playmates Revolution

In addition to nude photo’s of the worlds most beautiful women, it has a long history of publishing short stories by famous novelists from every genre, such as Arthur C. Clarke who writes science fiction and Ian Fleming who created the James Bond character.

As it grew in popularity Hepf hired the best writers and cartoonists in the world. It also made some famous like Doug Sneed, and Jack Cole.

These cartoons, usually thought of to be a medium for children were all mature in content. In Addition to cartoons, and comics, the magazine features monthly interviews of notable public figures, such as artists, architects, economists, composers, conductors, film directors, journalists, novelists, playwrights, religious figures, politicians, athletes, and race car drivers.

The magazine generally reflects a liberal editorial stance, although it often interviews conservative celebrities.

The front cover of the first issue featured Marilyn Monroe, December 1953, but Marilyn was never photographed by a Playboy staff photographer, they were bought from a independent photographer.

Playboy was not the original name thought of Hefner. By spring 1953, Hugh Hefner—a psychology graduate who had worked in Chicago for Esquire magazine in sales and marketing; and Children’s Activities magazine as circulation promotions manager. He had taken note and planned out the most successful elements for his own magazine, based on his experience.

Originally Hefner wanted to call it Stag, however, the publisher of an unrelated men’s adventure magazine, of the same name, contacted Hefner and informed him it would file suit to protect their trademark.

Finally he decided on Playboy based on a friends suggestion.

Playboy Playmates Forever

The first centerfold was Marilyn Monroe, although the picture used originally was taken for a calendar rather than for Hefner chose what he deemed the “sexiest” image, a previously unused nude study of Marilyn stretched with an upraised arm on a red velvet background with closed eyes and mouth open.

The heavy promotion centered around Marilyn’s nudity on the already-famous calendar, together with the teasers in marketing, made the new magazine a success.

The first issue sold out in weeks. Known circulation was almost 54,000. The cover price was 50¢. Copies of the first issue in mint to near-mint condition sold for over $5,000 in 2002

There was a back-lash to the magazine, and In 1968 feminist protester burned copies of the magazine, and denounced it as sexist and demoralizing. This also extended into the protesters wanting to boycott the Miss America Pageant, and today there is no bikini segment.

Hefner’s said he wanted to capture that “Girl next door” and photograph her naked, the girl you fantasize about your whole life.

The magazine runs several annual features and ratings. One of the most popular is its annual ranking of the top “party schools” among all U.S. universities and colleges. In 2009, the magazine used five criteria: bikini, brains, campus, sex and sports in the development of its list.

Playboy announced in February 2017, however, that the dropping of nudity had been a mistake and furthermore, for its March/April issue, reestablished some of its franchises, including the Playboy Philosophy and Party Jokes, but dropped the subtitle “Entertainment for Men”, inasmuch as gender roles have evolved.
